There is agreement both within the Australian and international research arena that research funding based on a competitive peer review process will lead to advances in breast cancer control. It is also accepted that a strong base of investigator-initiated research is an essential underpinning of a successful research effort.

Since its formation in October 1994 the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) has supported investigator-initiated research through a process of rigorous peer-review prior to disbursement of funds. The principle underpinning peer- review is that new knowledge - leading to improved prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer – arises from the support of excellent research.

A further strength of the NBCF’s research grants program is that funds have been awarded to investigate every aspect of breast cancer. While laboratory-based research will direct us to new therapies and ultimately the cause of breast cancer equally important is the investigation of improved treatments; ways to support women, their careers and families throughout the breast cancer experience; understanding risk factors for breast cancer and how to maximise the delivery of health services.

Since first offering funds to support breast cancer research in 1995 the NBCF has awarded more than $55 million to 230 research projects.

Following are descriptors in lay terms on each of the projects supported. It is presented this way to assist media and consumers and provide feedback to interested people on the outcomes of our significant funding commitment. The descriptors included here have been prepared by Jenny Stephenson and the NBCF is grateful for the time and effort that she took in preparing them.

We also acknowledge the members of the Research Advisory Committee, all experts in their field, who have given their time and expertise freely to advise and recommend to the Trustees those projects most worthy of being funded.

Finally, glancing down the lists of research funded will illustrate the key differentiators of the NBCF – national funding, peer reviewed, investigating every aspect of breast cancer. Much of the early work has progressed to larger funding grants from the NHMRC. To view details previous recipients click on the appropriate link below.
