NATIONAL ACTION PLAN

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) facilitated the development of a National Plan for Breast Cancer Research in response to calls from the research community and women.

In the past 10 years, Australia has witnessed many groundbreaking discoveries in areas such as genetic research, risk factors, breast cancer and fertility, lymphoedema and quality of life. The recent realisation that it would be much more beneficial to organise and fund research nationally led the NBCF to establishing a working party to develop a National Action Plan for Breast Cancer Research. The purpose of the Plan was to build on the strengths of Australian researchers, identify gaps that are relevant and important in the Australian context, and encourage research in this direction. It identified what is being done successfully overseas so that it is not replicated but rather applied in the Australian context. The plan focuses on developing a research strategy and prioritises breast cancer studies as well as creating a pool to help fund larger, and more costly studies.

The National Action Plan ties in with the Foundation’s ultimate goal - to find the cure and the causes of breast cancer. This goal may be a way off yet but the research efforts in Australia have helped us become a world leader in breast cancer treatment and survivor-related research.
