Invitation to participate in a research project

Dr Taryn Bessen from the University of Adelaide is inviting you to participate in a research study investigating what type of follow-up services women treated for breast cancer would prefer. Dr Bessen is interested in how often you would like to attend for a follow-up appointment, who you would like to see and where you would like that appointment to take place. Dr Bessen believes your views are important for helping to improve follow-up services for women treated for breast cancer.

If you willing to participate, you may choose to complete a questionnaire on-line -
www.adelaide.edu.au/public-health-surveys/bcf/
- or, if you prefer, you can contact a member of the research team (details below) and they will send you the questionnaire in the post. The questionnaire will take 30 minutes to complete. Any information you provide will remain confidential.

Cheque presentation
Floyd Risser, whose first wife died from breast cancer, generously donated $5000 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation in her memory. He has developed a housing estate in Atherton, Queensland and made the donation from his profits. Floyd is seen here presenting a cheque to NBCF Outreach Bureau ambassadors Sharon Cohrs and Sue MacMaster, both breast cancer survivors.

Mrs Gwen Risser wrote "It was such a blessing to meet Sharon and Sue and hear a little of their stories. There are so many courageous women who need support, better detection and treatment for this often insidious disease, and hopefully it will come through research in the not too distant future. It is truly our pleasure to contribute to this cause."

Dear NBCF supporters,

It has been brought to our attention that there is an organisation known as the Prostate and Breast Cancer Foundation which is purporting to be an amalgamation of NBCF and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). This organisation bears no relationship to either NBCF or PCFA. The NBCF is currently investigating the situation in order to ascertain the legitimacy of this organisation.

John Hopper, Sarah Murdoch and Carole RenoufRegister4 urges women to become members and participate in its first breast cancer research project

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NCBF) and Westpac today unveiled more than 8,000 pink paper cranes in celebration of the first birthday of Register4, NCBF's online community for volunteer breast cancer research participants.

Based on the Japanese custom that believes folding 1000 origami paper cranes will make a wish come true, Westpac's installation of 8,247 pink paper cranes represents a wish for each female staff member within Westpac to help find a cure for breast cancer.

Since launching last October, Register4 has acquired over 25 000 members, but is looking for more women (and men) to join the online community to spear head significant research projects – the first of which was launched today. The Baseline Health & Lifestyle Questionnaire was developed by some of Australia's leading cancer researchers to investigate the potential links between breast cancer and factors such as lifestyle and genetics. Register4 hopes that as many of its members as possible will complete the survey as every piece of information goes towards helping answer questions about breast cancer and ultimately finding a cure.

For more information visit www.register4.org.au.

These passionate supporters will also be invited to add a message of encouragement, or in memoriam, to their image.

We're uniting friends, loved ones and communities in their common desire to discover the cause and the cure for a disease that affects over 14,000 women – and their families, and their friends – in Australia every year.

We're building awareness and bringing people together to help solve the puzzle.

NBCF-funded Australian Breast Cancer Tissue Bank plays a critical role in new breast cancer research

Australian researcher Professor Christine Clarke and her international collaborators recently had their exciting breast cancer research published in Nature Genetics, one of the most highly regarded scientific journals.

Their research identified a genetic variation that is associated with a specific subtype of breast cancer called ER-negative breast cancer. ER-negative breast cancers lack the estrogen receptor and not respond to conventional hormone treatments like Tamoxifen.

The large international research team studied samples from over 5,000 women with breast cancer and over 17,000 controls. This would not have been possible without samples provided by Australian women through the Australian Breast Cancer Tissue Bank which is partly funded by the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

This discovery marks a milestone in our understanding of how certain breast cancers might form. The next step for researchers is to understand how this genetic variation contributes to breast cancer, which could lead to new treatment options and improved outcome for these women.
